With a technology that enables the large-scale production of a new sustainable textile fiber, derived from tree-based cellulose, TreeToTextile aims to replace parts of the global textile industry with bio-based textile fiber. Within a year, the company will move into GoCo House, where its first own research laboratory will be located.
How can we accelerate the development of a more sustainable and cost-efficient textile fiber and make it available for a broad market? This question was the starting point for the company TreeToTextile - founded in 2014 with H&M Group, Inter IKEA Group, Stora Enso and LSCS Invest as owners. The textile industry faces extensive challenges in terms of material issues and the need for sustainable and fossil-free materials are in growing demand. A challenge that affects not only the industry but also the environment and the planet in general.
- As the global population increase, so does the need for alternative textile fibers that meet the requirements for low environmental impact at a low cost. Textiles made from cellulose have great potential to respond to demands and make the textile industry more sustainable and bio-based. Our technology is based on a completely new process that makes this possible, says Åsa Östlund, Head of R&D at TreeToTextile AB.
The new research facility for TreeToTextile is now being prepared at GoCo House. Here, research and development will take place to test new materials and innovate how sustainable textile fibers with a low environmental footprint become a reality.
- GoCo Health Innovation City is exactly the context and environment we want to operate in. The entire area, with its sustainability profile, investment in innovation and inspiring environments, made the choice easy. Having our own research team and all the conditions in place is important for taking the next step towards commercialization and at the same time contribute to a more sustainable textile industry, Åsa Östlund continues.
For GoCo House, the announcement means that another leading player will move into the new signature building.
- The building is starting to be filled with innovative companies with sustainability and health as a common focus and joint agenda. We are pleased to welcome TreeToTextile to GoCo Health Innovation City and we look forward to following and support their continued journey towards a sustainable textile industry, anchored in research. The company's business fulfills an important purpose, and their establishment is guaranteed to inspire valuable collaborations and insights - both for GoCo Health Innovation City and our surrounding community, says Alexander Kronberg, Business Developer at GoCo Health Innovation City.
